What Is VETASSESS?

VETASSESS — Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services — is one of Australia's most widely used skills assessing authorities. Authorised by the Australian Government's Department of Home Affairs, VETASSESS evaluates professionals and tradespeople across more than 150 occupations.

Two Categories Assessed by VETASSESS

Professional and General Occupations: More than 150 knowledge- and expertise-driven roles across business, construction, hospitality, health, science, agriculture, arts, and education.

Trade Occupations: Selected practical trades assessed through documentary, technical, and—where required—practical stages.

VETASSESS Groups for Professional Occupations

VETASSESS divides professional occupations into Groups A through F, each with its own qualification and work-experience requirements.

Group ABachelor Degree or Higher (Highly Relevant Field)

The most direct route for degree-qualified professionals whose degree closely aligns with the nominated occupation.

Criteria
  • Bachelor degree or higher in a highly relevant field of study
  • At least 1 year of post-qualification relevant employment at an appropriate skill level within the last 5 years

Few occupations in this group: Actuary · Agricultural Consultant · Audiologist · Biotechnologist · Archaeologist · Construction Project Manager · Economist · Environmental Health Officer · Food Technologist · Internal Auditor

Group BBachelor Degree with Flexible Pathways

A Bachelor degree or higher is required, with alternatives for applicants whose field does not perfectly match the occupation.

Criteria
  • Highly relevant Bachelor + 1 year post-qualification experience in the last 5 years
  • Bachelor + additional highly relevant Diploma + 2 years’ post-qualification experience
  • Bachelor without a highly relevant field + 3 years’ post-qualification experience
  • Pre-qualification route: 5 years highly relevant employment + 1 year at an appropriate skill level in the last 5 years

Few occupations in this group: Advertising Specialist · Apiarist · Dairy Cattle Farmer · Web Designer · Production Manager · Policy Analyst · Multimedia Designer · Marketing Specialist · Laboratory Manager

Group CDiploma or Advanced Diploma Level

For occupations where a Diploma or Advanced Diploma is the recognised entry-level qualification.

Criteria
  • AQF Diploma or higher in a highly relevant field + 1 year post-qualification experience
  • AQF Diploma + additional highly relevant Certificate IV + 1 year post-qualification experience
  • AQF Diploma without a highly relevant field + 2 years’ post-qualification experience
  • Pre-qualification route: 3 years highly relevant employment + 1 year at an appropriate skill level

Group DCertificate III or Certificate IV Level

For vocational occupations where a Certificate III or IV (or equivalent) is the standard qualification.

Criteria
  • Certificate IV in a highly relevant field + 1 year post-qualification experience
  • Certificate IV without a highly relevant field + 2 years’ post-qualification experience
  • Certificate III in a highly relevant field + 3 years’ post-qualification experience
  • Pre-qualification route: 3 years highly relevant employment + 1 year at an appropriate skill level

Few occupations in this group: Clinical Coder · Pharmacy Technician · Insurance Agent · Diversional Therapist

Group EDiploma Level (Single Pathway, Clinical Roles)

A small, tightly defined group of specialist clinical support roles with one assessment pathway.

Criteria
  • AQF Diploma in a highly relevant field of study
  • At least 1 year of post-qualification relevant employment at an appropriate skill level within the last 5 years

Group FCertificate II Level

An entry-level vocational category covering a small number of animal care, sports coaching, and related occupations.

Criteria
  • Certificate II in a highly relevant field + 1 year post-qualification experience
  • Certificate II without a highly relevant field + 2 years’ post-qualification experience
  • Pre-qualification route: 3 years highly relevant employment + 1 year at an appropriate skill level

Assessment for Trade Occupations

Pathway 1 — No Recognised Australian Qualification: Applicants must demonstrate at least six years of employment with no formal training, or at least four years with relevant formal training.

Pathway 2 — Recognised Australian Qualification: Applicants provide an accepted Australian qualification or current Australian occupational licence; work experience is assessed alongside it.

Additional occupation-specific requirements may apply to licensed trades involving public safety.
